Guide to Applying for a Retirement Visa in the UAE
You've worked hard all your life, and it's time to retire and spend time with your family, on your interests, and simply living a relaxed, comfortable life in the sun. The UAE is a tempting destination for expats looking for their forever home in the sun, but do you know how to retire in the UAE?
In this blog, we’ll take an in-depth look at expat retirement in the UAE, including how to apply for a retirement visa and the financial and residency requirements to consider when applying for a UAE retirement residency visa. We’ll also introduce you to one of the most exquisite communities on offer, the mesmerising Ghaf Woods.
What Is the UAE Retirement Visa, and Who Is Eligible?
The UAE retirement residency visa is a long-term visa initially valid for five years. It can be renewed repeatedly as long as eligibility criteria are met. Anyone from around the world can apply for a Retirement Visa and embrace a high standard of living, excellent healthcare, financial stability and a community that values and respects its elder members.
There’s also no income tax on earnings or savings, so you can enjoy your savings without worrying about deductions. There's no need to leave the family behind either, as residency allows you the option to sponsor spouses and dependents, giving the whole family a chance to experience life in the UAE.
Financial and Residency Requirements for Retiring in the UAE
While there may not be any income tax levied on your savings, there are specific financial and residency requirements for retiring in the UAE. If you want to apply for a UAE Retirement Visa, you must:
- Already hold a valid UAE visa (e.g., work visa or spouse visa) to transition to the retirement visa.
- Be 55 years or older when you apply for a Retirement Visa
You must also meet one of the following financial criteria:
- Own property worth at least AED 1 million.
- Have savings of at least AED 1 million.
- Earn a minimum of AED 20,000 per month (AED 15,000 for Dubai).
Applicants are also generally expected to have worked for at least 15 years, either inside or outside the UAE, but this can vary depending on your circumstances. If you meet all these criteria, you can begin considering the first steps towards obtaining a visa.
How to Apply for a UAE Retirement Visa: Step-by-Step Guide
- Check your eligibility: Make sure you’ve checked our list above and that you meet the criteria for application.
- Collect your documentation: This includes a valid passport, proof of financial eligibility such as property ownership documents, bank statements and salary slips, as well as health insurance and a completed visa application form.
- Submit your application: You can do this through the Dubai Tourism official platform or the Dubai Land Department if you're applying through a property investment.
- Pay your fees: There is a charge for applying for a Dubai Retirement Visa, but it shouldn't significantly impact your budget, as it's approximately AED 3000 - 4000. Additional costs also need to be taken into account for medical tests and processing your Emirates ID (which is mandatory to live in the UAE).
- Acceptance: Once everything has been processed and approved, you’ll receive your Residence Entry Permit, your Emirates ID, and your passport stamped with your Retirement Visa.
- Renewal: After five years, you can apply to renew your visa if you wish to continue living in the UAE.
